Andrej Lemanis' Breakers take on an in-form Sydney Kings tomorrow night, and while it's Lemanis' New Zealand team he's concentrating on for now it could be Australia that comes knocking in the near future.
“Obviously to coach your country would be a tremendous honour and great responsibility,” says Lemanis.
He has been Brett Brown's assistant for the past four years, but Brown resigned this week leaving Lemanis as one of the leading contenders.
“As far as I understand it Basketball Australia are in still in the review process - I'm sure there'll be many quality applicants. It'll play out over time and I still need to have the conversation with the Breakers,” says Lemanis.
Should the Breakers give him the okay Lemanis will put his hand up for the job, and the Tall Blacks captain he coaches week in and week out wishes him all the best.
“I think Andrej's done the time, he's been a great assistant to Brett Brown, he knows the whole Boomer culture," says Mika Vukona. “If his name's put through then why not give him the chance, he's done a great job here with the Breakers and that's testament to him.”
Sports Tonight understands that should Lemanis be offered the top job neither the Tall Blacks nor the NBL see him coaching the Breakers and the Boomers as a conflict of interest.
For now however the coach's focus is on the Sydney Kings, who completed a rare sunshine swing last week, beating both Cairns and Townsville in one round.
“In an eight-team competition everybody's pretty damn good so everyone's got to get their fair share of wins and losses,” says Lemanis.
The Breakers will be hoping for another one of the former tomorrow night
