The wife of Manukau Mayor and Auckland super city mayoral candidate Len Brown has been diagnosed with throat cancer.

Shan Inglis, 49, discovered after an exploratory operation last month that she had papillary thyroid carcinoma, the most common form of thyroid cancer, the New Zealand Herald reported.

However, Mr Brown said his wife had requested he continue his campaign for the Auckland mayoralty.

The results came through at the same time Mr Brown was being heavily scrutinised over his council credit card use.

Ms Inglis will undergo treatment to remove malignant tissue and radiation treatment. The cancer she is suffering from has a high survival rate.

Her cancer comes two years after Mr Brown nearly died from a heart attack.

"We know what it is like to deal with tough family health issues, and we know that recovery is best served by taking a positive approach in which we offer Shan every support while continuing to function as close to normal as is possible," Mr Brown said.

This shows character of both Len and Shan. Auckland needs strong people with this type of character to tackle the issues one by one.

Lets face it, imagine if they got bommer Banks. He would star in "destroyed in seconds".

People are that stupid they would vote for him.

I feel sorry for Len, he seems like a nice guy who is struggling with the pressure. I don't think he will be able to concentrate on the big picture. Maybe someone else should stand for Mayor?

Good on Len and his wife for the positive attitude they are taking to this. People always stay you should stay normal and positive through these kinds of things. Also - I guess this is why he's been upset. Len seems like a real person.

Len need's to step down now. This stress will just add to his already questionably coping skills. He should look after his wife and no one would think anything less of him.
