It’s a sad fact of living down here in New Zealand that fans of musicals are deprived of the biggest and best shows that any Londoner, New Yorker, or even Melburnian could casually wander in to see after work one evening.
As one such fan, I’m pleased to see what appears to be a growing trend for showing live recordings of stage shows on the big screen. They have to be approached with caution though – the risk of bad sound, flat lighting and poor cinematography is high, and will turn even the most professional production into a home video rather than a cinematic masterpiece.
Thankfully, this film avoids most of those pitfalls. It was made in October at London’s O2 Arena, where a special performance was put on to celebrate the iconic musical’s 25 years on the West End.
The cast, backed by a full orchestra and a massed choir, is superb.
Tenor Alfie Boe delivers a masterful and moving performance as Jean Valjean. He is ably supported by musical theatre performer Ramin Karimloo as Enjolras, and comic relief is provided with impeccable timing by Little Britain’s Matt Lucas.
Don’t let Jonas Brother Nick’s appearance as Marius put you off – his performance couldn’t be further removed from the wimpy boy band pop we’re used to hearing from him.
Those who like musicals for their razzle and dazzle may be disappointed to discover that this version of Les Mis is mostly about the music rather than the theatrics. The singers, though costumed, stand stationary at microphones for most of the numbers. It’s up to Boublil & Schönberg's rousing songs to tell the story, which of course they do with ease.
This concert probably comes as close to doing the musical justice as is possible on screen. The odd bad edit and shaky shot is easily forgiven once you get caught up in the fervour of the French Revolution. It’s lengthy, but with the welcome 15-minute interval, it’s almost as good as being at the theatre.
Four stars.
