Liam and Ruby top baby names for 2011

The Department of Internal Affairs has released its list of the most popular baby names for 2011 according to the Office of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Topping the list for boys’ names is Liam, which retains its position from 2010, while Ruby claims the top female spot for the first time.

Ruby ranked third in 2010 and second in 2009.

The second most popular boys’ name was Joshua, which placed sixth in 2010 and fourth in 2009, and Lucas enters the top five for the first time after a 10th place finish in 2010 and 11th in 2009.

The top five girls’ names for 2011 are the same as 2010 but the order has changed with Sophie slipping from first place last year to third place this year.

The only new entry to the top 10 list is Noah, who has come in at number six.

@Chevy. Yes it's a real name and it's uncommon too which is very acceptable. The concern is there is far too many unusual and absurd invented names out there - we should not be encouraging people to call their kids something they'll get traumatised for in their adolescence.

Surely Kiwi's have a bit more spark than that. If we are all unique then shouldn't we have unique names?!
