The Australian man who murdered the cousin of slain Manawatu farmer Scott Guy has been sentenced to life with a minimum of 14 years in prison.

Stefan Schmidt, 26, was found guilty of murdering Andy Marshall after pushing him from the second storey window of a pub in Perth.

Mr Marshall is the cousin of Fielding farmer Scott Guy, who was shot dead at the end of his driveway in 2010. Mr Guy’s alleged killer, brother-in-law Ewen Macdonald, was acquitted of murder.

Before Schmidt’s sentencing, his lawyers indicated they would appeal it.

Schmidt admitted pushing Mr Marshall at the Ocean Beach Hotel in 201 but says he never meant to push him through a window, falling seven metres to the ground.

He said he was annoyed that Mr Marshall had intervened in his attempt to send two friends home.

Marshall had moved to Perth two years earlier with plans to become a professional musician.
