Auckland power lifter Rodney Newman has been banned for life after the Sports Tribunal found him guilty of multiple anti-doping violations.

Newman had previously been suspended by the Sports Tribunal for two years in 2008.

Drug Free Sport New Zealand filed proceedings with the Sports Tribunal in August 2010 alleging he had committed further anti-doping violations.

They included possessing a range of anabolic steroids, which are a prohibited substance; refusing to provide a urine sample, and participating in a sporting activity by coaching while still under suspension.

However, the Ministry of Health took separate legal proceedings against him in the District Court over importing prescription medicines and the Sports Tribunal hearing was adjoured.

The District Court found early last month that Newman had imported and possessed prescription medicines, including some substances banned in sport under the World Anti-Doping (WADA) code.

The Sports Tribunal then held an anti-doping hearing on January 16. Newman accepted that most of the anti-doping allegations against him were established, but denied allegations of use or attempted use of prohibited substances.

However, the Tribunal found the alleged anti-doping violations against Newman had been proven to the required standard and were grave enough for it to impose a lifetime ban.
