Obesity experts are to start looking at the similarities between smoking and obesity at the Fags and Fat seminar in Wellington today.

One in three Kiwi adults are overweight, while one in four are obese.

Cancer Society health promotion manager Jan Pearson says the success of tobacco control over the last couple of years needs to be looked at as ways to fight obesity.

She says while the seminar will look at similarities between smoking and over-eating; she says obesity poses heftier problems.

“The thing with food is it’s so much more complex, because it’s so tied up in social and cultural ways of doing things,” she says.

Dr Pearson is calling for some clear policy direction from the Government on obesity prevention.

Hey Karen, if I choose to eat fatty foods and get fat then I have myself to blame. Diet lies in personal responsibility, but these nutritionists clearly disagree with the concept of individual free will. Water-boarding is more fun than the diet these wowsers want to enforce by order of the politburo.

If cutting out all supposedly carcinogenic food and tobacco products means living another 30-40 years on celery sticks and tap water then I'd much rather get cancer thanks.
