Rare replica warplane crash lands near Levin

By 3 News online staff

A rare World-War-II replica warplane was forced to make a crash landing in a paddock near Levin this afternoon after suffering engine failure.

Only the pilot was onboard, and he survived the landing.

He has been taken to Wellington Hospital in a Westpac Rescue helicopter.

Emergency services also arrived the scene, just off Denton Rd, south-east of the Levin township.

The plane is a replica of the Focke-Wulf 190 warplane and originally took off from Levin.

The pilot called emergency services after the plane landed informing them he had suffered head injuries and needed assistance.

The aircraft had originally declared an emergency and was going to land at Kapiti Coast Airport.

Over 20,000 of the planes were built and just a handful of originals remain, with only three or four of them currently in flying condition.
