British singer Lily Allen has lashed out at a UK newspaper columnist after she was branded an "over-privileged cry-baby" in an article.

Writer Julie Burchill penned a column for Britain's The Sun newspaper in support of pop star Cheryl Cole after the Girls Aloud singer was axed from the panel of the US version of The X Factor.

Burchill heaped praised on Cole for sticking to her working class roots, comparing her favourably to Allen, who she dismissed as a "public-school tool (idiot)" due to her privileged upbringing.

In her column, she writes, "I ADORE Cheryl Cole... I adore the way she spat back at that over-privileged cry-baby Lily Allen when the public-school tool took a poke at her way back in the day."

The ‘Smile’ hitmaker is fuming over the comments, taking to her Twitter.com page to hit back at Burchill.

She writes, "Julie Burchill, you are an ignorant and bitter old troll, but I guess you know that already... She's the snob, I am many things, a snob is not one of them. I am a dwarf though.

"The amateur psychiatrist in me says (she) see's (sic) a lot of her younger self in me, and she's a bit of a "self-loather". #poorjulieburchill."

Cole and Allen were embroiled in a public feud several years ago after Allen labelled the Girls Aloud star a "stupid bitch".
