Bexley Park, East Christchurch, is a new suburb built on sandy soil.

And when that sandy soil was jolted hard by yesterday’s earthquake, it changed its structure and fell apart.

But how and why did this happen?

The process is called liquefaction and our Wellington Bureau Chief Gordon McBride was on hand yesterday to explain how it works.
