Local teenagers get the chance to learn how to build apps for iphones and smartphones

The huge popularity of the iPad and smartphones has spawned a new industry - the development of the downloadable apps that are used on the devices.

New Zealanders are among those enjoying international success developing the applications.

And as Tony Field reports, this summer, students at Bubble Dome Education are being offered classes in how to design their own apps.

Jake I agree with you as I am in the middle of high school at the moment and have been wanting to go into the video game development field for sometime and this video is an unfair representation of that class as a whole as the few being interviewed put next to no work into their games it was our instructors. If like me and the few who aren't seen/talked to during the video were actually talked to you would be given a more realistic view of what actually happens to those that work hard. So in short yes most of the students at these courses are given an unrealistic view of the way things are but not all there a few of us that actually do work and no that it's "Not really easy actually". I'm glad someone agrees with me. I'm going into my last year of high school and was interested in the field of video game development. So naturally I've been learning all I can for a few years. I've talked to people in the industry and they all have high level maths/physics/computing degrees. It frustrates me that these kids a little younger than me think they can cash in on something 'easy'. Even if you are good at your job, the job market is quite tight in the industry (so I've been told) let alone without the current economic climate. You may end up working on the Dora the Explorer game- so many others I've talked to have a misconception that video game design is easy: if you play games, you can design them. Agree with both of you the whole piece was completely misleading. I'm sorry to rant I just get very frustrated with the arrogance and ignorance of people within a few years of myself

Agreed John, this is a little misleading.

Real game development is extremely hard and a good understanding of mathematics and physics is essential. The chances of making lots of money from these games are low as it’s a very competitive market. I think these kids are being given a somewhat false perception of what game development really is and how hard it is.
