Three hunters clung to logs after their boat capsized this morning in the freezing Manawatu River.

The Palmerston North Rescue helicopter winched the men from the river just after 9am this morning.

Rescue helicopter pilot, Marc Bridgeman, says the men were in trouble when they arrived.

“They couldn’t get themselves out of it because of the bend in the river and the current,” he says. “So they had managed to get themselves on some logs that were sticking out of the water.”

The men are being treated in hospital.
