A man wearing a distinctive orange plaster above his left eye has robbed a Lower Hutt bank of "a small amount of cash", police say.

The man walked into the Petone Westpac branch about 9.10am on Tuesday, asked for money and handed over a note, said Detective Sergeant George Campbell in a statement.

The teller handed over a small amount of cash and the man ran across Jackson Street and towards Petone Railway Station.

No one was harmed in the incident and police are hoping the public will help identify the offender.

The man, who was wearing the distinctive plaster above his left eye, was described as Maori, of medium build and was wearing a black beanie, dark gloves and a grey and black patterned hooded sweatshirt.
