Kiwi actress Lucy Lawless has thrown her support behind a campaign against deep-sea drilling off the coast of New Zealand.

The former Xena: Warrior Princess star fears offshore drilling will increase the risk of an oil spill similar to the one that occurred off the port of Tauranga last month.

She is now urging fans to fight plans to drill in New Zealand waters by signing a petition, which will be handed to Prime Minister John Key.

She says, "I'd urge anyone who wants to protect our coasts from an even worse oil spill than that which we saw in Tauranga to sign this petition. By doing so, they'll also be doing something positive about the climate crisis that this planet is facing."

The petition already has more than 100,000 signatures.

Put your agression to that of what is a consern and not to any "one" person!
Your voices travel just as far!

Well it's not like it's going to be a problem for her when the price of gasoline goes through the stratosphere.

Congratulations to her for taking a stand. However it should be remembered that "deep water" drilling is relatively quite safe assuming regulations are in place AND enforced.

Thank you, Lucy Lawless! Obviously more intelligent and environmentally aware than the mining-company supporters venting their spleen against you here. What do they care if the sea is awash in oil? Not a jot. They don't have it in them. Keep up the good work, Lucy, most NZers are right behind you!

So we can expect Xena to only use horsepower in future, having given up on the use of oil, or is she just another deluded hypocrite?

Isn't this the same airhead that was recently centre stage with Robin Malcom and Helen Kelly fronting for a non New Zealand union in an unsuccessful attempt to steal the Hobbit production for Australia? Absolutely no credibility whatsoever.
