New York hipsters MGMT say they wanted to release their new album as a free download, but instead have settled for streaming it live on their website.
Congratulations, the duo's second record, was due to be released in April but leaked onto the internet last week.
"Hey everybody," they wrote on their website, "the album leaked, and we wanted you to be able to hear it from us."
It is not apparent yet if the band will still release the album as an official free download, and if not, why not.
"We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn't make sense to anyone but us," they wrote, implying their label Columbia Records, which is owned by Sony, could be standing in their way.
The album has been described as having no singles, and more of a complete body of work than their debut, Oracular Spectacular.
