American band MGMT have made some of the biggest hits of the last few years.
Their debut album has sold more than a million copies, and was nominated for both Brit and Grammy awards.
They've enjoyed huge success for a band often described as "trippy".
Listening to MGMT's music, and watching their videos, it's hard to imagine what's going on in their mind, Or what their extra-curricular activities are.
Well, here's a clue.
“It started out drinking car bombs,” says Andrew VanWyngarden.
Car bombs, he says, are a pint of Guiness with a shot of whiskey.
“I ended up in Connecticut, at a very famous musician's house. On acid.
“I was kidnapped. Let's just leave it at that,” he says.
WynGarden says a lot's changed since then.
Personally, he doesn't drink as much.
Musically, their sophomore album Congratulations is also different.
And some fans wanting instant pop gratification were disappointed.
VanWyngarden says they never set out to make pop hits and they won't be starting now.
After their current tour, they return to New York to start work on their next album.
But they have made plenty of music that people like.
And they'll be playing that in Auckland tonight, Christchurch tomorrow and Wellington on Saturday.
