Newly sworn in MPs gather at 11am on Wednesday to hear Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae read the speech from the throne at the state opening of Parliament.

The speech, written by Prime Minister John Key, will set out the government's legislative programme for the next three years.

Mr Key says there aren't any surprises in it because National explained all its intentions during the election campaign.

The 121 MPs in the 50th parliament were sworn in on Tuesday and Lockwood Smith was elected unopposed as Speaker for a second term.

After Sir Jerry has read the speech parliament will start the debate in reply, when opposition parties can challenge every aspect of the government's programme.

Parliament is expected to adjourn at 6pm for the summer recess, resuming on February 6 when the debate will continue.

The last parliament was dull and boring without the likes of Winston. He is one man who can bring colour, courage and some spine to the opposition. I'm sure he will be a thorn in the side of those who want to sell assets belonging to ordinary New Zealanders not politicians. It's a pity he did not get the numbers to stop this daylight robbery of New Zealand assets.

great to see lockwood back as speaker, there has never been a fairer speaker. Although i think the likes of Winston will struggle to understand parliament isn't the mess it was when he was part of it. This is a speaker who works hard with the opposition to make sure that they can get answers to their questions.
