Television personality Maggie Barry has been chosen as National's candidate for the North Shore seat in this year's election.

The seat is a safe one for National – they've held it since 1949. It is currently held by Defence Minister Wayne Mapp, who is retiring from politics at this year's election in November.

Labour has welcomed Ms Barry's candidacy.

“In the spirit of hospitality as a North Shore resident, I’d be happy to show Maggie Barry around the area," says Labour candidate Ben Clark.

"Maggie’s new to the electorate so I’m sure she’ll appreciate a local’s perspective on the issues that are important.
“Congratulations Maggie on your selection, and I look forward to seeing you out in the electorate, and on the hustings later in the year.”

Ms Barry is best known as a broadcaster, particularly for Maggie's Garden Show. Until recently she was host of the drive-time show on RadioLIVE.

I think Maggie Barry will make a fabulous Member of Parliament for The North Shore seat in Auckland. It is such a pity a woman of such immense talent is aligning herself with the Nats. Steven D. Brown Waitara 2077 NSW Sydney

I think Barry may be looking at politics through rose tinted glasses. She will find it much more caustic than she imagines.

Well it looks as if Mr. Brash will be elated having a like minded entity to correspond with. There being another pretentious egotistical guru of perceived notoriety. Surely it must be time a law was introduced requiring a candidate to have been living in any given electorate for a certain period of time...'for heaven sakes'...before they are eligible to stand. This recent carry on is making a mockery of the whole process. In fact it is bloody disgraceful!!

It is now 2011 that seat as safe as Key says but who has a lot of love for Barry?she may fall out just as often as her past jobs and life.Maybe anybody that knows anything about flowers like Brownlee does, should be another chance to do a bit of weeding out of the Nat party,as it is over grown with weeds and a few pansy!s.
