Police say there have been no reports of further damage

Residents in Christchurch were shaken awake by a magnitude 5 earthquake in the middle of the night.

The quake struck at 2.47am this morning, 10km east of Christchurch and 9km deep, GNS science says.

It was followed by a 3.1 shortly after 4am, a 3.7 shortly after 5am and a 3.3 shortly after 7am.

Police say there have been no reports of further damage.

The distance given for earthquakes are given from a certain point in a straight line, so for Christchurch it's a point in the square. South New Brighton is a suburb of CHCH, as is Riccarton, Bexley, Hornby, Burnside etc. The same certain point for distances happens all around NZ including for road distances.

Get real k, who is going to report slight damage to the Police? This was another little shake which apparently has to be reported but most residents did not give a tinkers. People only report substantial events to the Police and do not nit pick! Been great weather in Christchurch though!
