A magnitude-5.3 earthquake struck the Bay of Plenty early this morning.
According to the GNS Science GeoNet Data Centre, the quake hit at 2am and was centred 30km east of Murupara at a depth of 60km. It was felt across central-eastern areas of the North Island.
Two smaller quakes struck last night - first a magnitude-3.4 about 20km southwest of New Plymouth and then a magnitude-2.9 quake in Lyttelton.
There were no immediate reports of damage.
