A Hawke's Bay teenager denies bullying a colleague he set on fire at a party last year, saying he was trying to copy a Jackass television stunt.

Matt-Dillon Shannon is on trial in the High Court in Napier after denying a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent after he and some friends set Hayden Calder alight at Shannon's 17th birthday party in Hastings on August 23 last year.

Mr Calder, in a police interview, says Shannon and some friends grabbed him, held him down, poured petrol over him and set him alight with a lighter.

Prosecutor Russell Collins described the case as "a most serious case of bullying", Fairfax reports.

But Shannon said in a police video interview that they set him alight after people at the party talked first about drinking petrol and then about people being set alight in a Jackass movie.

Shannon admitted a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with reckless disregard but denies causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

It's got nothing to with jackass, the guy did it on purpose. Saying it's prank is no excuse, it's one thing if he was foolishly mucking around with patrol and accidentally set him alight, then it would be his fault by recklessness, but he intended to pour the petrol on him, and any reasonable person would know doing that would cause serious injury. Undoubtedly guilty, and deserves to get the book thrown at him

the mental state of these kids are what is at fault here. we have had many a laugh as a family of teenagers over this programme, admittadly alot of it is over the top. any person that re-inacts what they see on a game or tv or any such abuse etc is a sad unstable person. dont be ignorant and blame the parents or tv when everyone knows what is right and what is sick and it is choice of the person to repeat it. if these kids or the parents for that matter are blaming tv then there is an issue then.
