A man accused of uploading a leaked copy of X-men Origins: Wolverine online in March has been arrested by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents in New York.

Bosses at 20th Century Fox, the studio behind the Hugh Jackman movie, were furious when a full-length print of X-Men Origins: Wolverine began appearing illegally on websites - a month before it was due for release in movie theatres.

The FBI was called in to help track down the source of the leak and on Wednesday they arrested Bronx resident Gilberto Sanchez.

The 47-year-old has been charged with unlawfully distributing a pirated copy of the movie and faces up to three years in a federal prison and a US$250,000 fine.
