A man on the run from police in North Carolina attacked and bit a police dog, ripping its ear in two.

Keith Glaspie, 22, was being pursued by police last Sunday when they released two-year-old Maxx, who soon caught up with the fugitive.

ABC reports Glaspie then turned on the dog and tore into its ear with his teeth, ripping a piece off.

Maxx responded by biting Glaspie, who had to be treated for wounds.

The dog's ear was reattached, an operation requiring 15 stitches.

“When [Glaspie] was biting the dog, it was something we haven’t seen,” Cpl David Pellegrino told a local TV station.

“Yes, our dogs do get assaulted, but no one has ever tried to cannibalise one of our animals before.”

Glaspie was on bail at the time. He is now being held in custody on a US$1 million bond.
