Police have charged a man after a wedding guest was hit by a car and killed on his way home from a reception at Matangi, south of Hamilton.

William Hoskins, 26, from Hastings, was found barely breathing by a passing motorist just 150 metres from the wedding venue about 5am on Sunday.

A 47-year-old Hamilton man has been charged today with careless driving causing death in relation to the incident.

He will appear in the Hamilton District Court on Friday, the New Zealand Herald reports.

Police are not looking for anyone else.

A St John ambulance spokesman said Mr Hoskins, who was wearing a suit, suffered multiple injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle.

He died soon after paramedics arrived at the scene.
