A man has been charged over the death of Timaru businessman Allan Hubbard in a car crash last year.
Mr Hubbard, founder of South Canterbury Finance, died and his wife June Hubbard was injured in the crash on State Highway 1, at Hilderthorpe, north of Timaru, on September 2.
A 40-year-old man from South Otago has been charged with careless driving causing death and careless driving causing injury, Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy of Oamaru police said today.
The man is due to appear in Dunedin District Court on Friday.
Mr McCoy said a thorough and robust investigation was carried out before the decision to lay charges.
Police could not comment further because the case was before the court.
South Canterbury Finance went into receivership in August 2010.
The company's collapse forced the Government, under its retail deposit guarantee scheme, to cover the $1.7 billion of losses suffered by its investors.
Five people from South Canterbury Finance are facing fraud charges: former company chief executive Lachie McLeod, former company finance officer Graeme Brown, former directors Ed Sullivan, Bob White and Timaru accountant Terry Hutton.
