A 28-year-old man has appeared in court charged with murder following the death of a man in a block of Hamilton flats.
The 38-year-old was found badly injured on the upstairs walkway of the two-storey flats in Wha Street, Frankton yesterday afternoon after emergency services responded to reports of a man being beaten.
Ambulance officers were unable to save his life.
The 28-year-old man was remanded in custody until March 20 after appearing in Hamilton District Court today.
He was found in the flat next door to the man and initially arrested and charged with assault before the charge was upgraded to murder.
Detective Sergeant Daryl Smith of Hamilton CIB said a scene examination was expected to be completed this evening.
The occupants of six of the eight flats in the building had been found alternative accommodation.
The dead man's body was removed this afternoon and a post-mortem will be carried out in Auckland tomorrow morning.
Det Sgt Smith said police had been in contact with dead man's family but were not yet able to confirm his identity because he went by a number of different names.
