A 40-year-old Gisborne man has "astounded" police after recording a breath alcohol level more than four times the limit for driving.

The man blew 1745mcg; the adult limit is 400mcg.

"The troops were astounded," Gisborne police sergeant David Walker told the Herald on Sunday.

"That's probably the highest reading that a lot of the guys have seen."

The man had crashed near Gisborne but was "walking around and talking fine".

He admitted to police he was an alcoholic.

This guy should be shot before he kills some innocent bystander, maybe you or me, but no our PC court system will have him back behind the wheel in time for new year.
