A 76-year-old man remains in a critical condition after a car and train collided near the Waikato town of Morrinsville on Sunday.

The man was left trapped in the car after it collided at the intersection of State Highway 26 and Piako Road, southwest of Morrinsville.

Emergency services managed to free him and he was taken to Waikato Hospital, where he remained in a critical condition in the intensive care unit on Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The train driver tooted his horn repeatedly after he saw the car approach from about 30m away on SH26 but the car didn't stop and the vehicle spun into a paddock after the train struck the driver's side of the vehicle, Constable Erik Harrewijn told the Waikato Times.

He said the train driver was traumatised but otherwise unhurt.
