A man has been killed at Fonterra's Edendale plant in Southland, after being crushed in an elevator shaft.

The contractor was installing a milk powder dryer at the site this morning, as part of a $212 million expansion project.

A spokesperson for Fonterra said the company's "thoughts and hearts go out to the contractor's family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time".

Workers at the plant have been evacuated and surrounding roads closed, while the Labour Department investigates the accident.

It's the second incident at a Fonterra plant this year. Fifty-two-year-old Theodorus Blake was crushed to death at the company's Hawera plant in January.
