A 27-year-old man has been fatally stabbed in a fight in Lower Hutt and two men have handed themselves in to police.

Police were called to a fight in the suburb of Stokes Valley about 9pm on Thursday to find people performing first aid on the victim, said Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Cooper of the Lower Hutt CIB.

The man had a number of stab wounds to his chest and died a short time after being taken to hospital.

Two men, aged 20 and 22, later handed themselves in to Lower Hutt police station. They have been charged with common assault and will appear in Lower Hutt District Court on Friday.

Further charges are pending, Det Sen Sgt Cooper said.

"At this stage we are beginning to piece together the events which led to this man's death last night and we are appealing to anyone that was in the area of George and Logie Streets to contact police if they saw or heard anything suspicious."

A post-mortem will be carried out on Friday.
