A man found dead in a Wellington stormwater drain is thought to have fallen in while trying to retrieve his car keys.

The body of 43-year-old Peter Black, who lived in the Wellington suburb of Johnsonville, was spotted in a drain near the Te Papa museum carpark just before 1pm on Sunday.

Mr Black was named today after police contacted his next of kin.

His death was believed to be accidental, Detective Inspector Paul Basham said.

"Whilst the coroner will determine the exact cause of death, it appears Mr Black dropped his car keys down the stormwater culvert and had attempted to retrieve them," he says.

"Police recovered a set of keys in the stormwater culvert belonging to the deceased, as a result of a thorough scene examination."

A post-mortem was carried out on Mr Black yesterday.
