Lower Hutt police have launched a homicide inquiry following the death of a 24-year-old man last night.

An incident in Pomare has police wanting to speak to a group of people in the area around 9.20pm.

Police were notified of an assault on High Street, between Taita Drive and Peck Street.

From what they understand so far, it seems the man was involved in an altercation with the group of people.

The man was seriously injured in the attack and was on life support. He passed away around 3pm today.

A 17-year-old Lower Hutt man has been charged with assault in relation to the incident.

Police would also like to speak to any witnesses to the incident or those with any related information.
