Man dies after leaping from waterfall

An 18-year-old is dead after leaping from a 24m waterfall near Whangarei on New Year's Day.

Police told the Herald on Sunday the boy leapt from Wairua Falls, about 30km from Whangarei, into a 3m deep pool and did not resurface.

Divers retrieved his body yesterday.

Local kaumatua have put a seven-day rahui, a form of tapu, on the site.
