A 56-year-old man is dead following a head-on crash near Blenheim.

The 56-year-old, who is understood to be from overseas, was driving the middle of three cars when a ute coming the other way appeared to cross the centre line east of Havelock on Wednesday afternoon, police say.

The ute clipped the first vehicle before colliding with the second.

The third vehicle ran off the road.

The 56-year-old and the ute driver were badly hurt in the crash. They were flown by helicopter to Wellington Hospital but the 56-year-old died on the way, a police spokeswoman said.

The drivers of the other two vehicles were unharmed. None of the vehicles were carrying passengers.
