A man hit by a north-bound van while he was walking along State Highway 1 on the Kapiti Coast early today has died.
The 27-year-old man was walking north of Waikanae when the accident happened about 1.45am, Sergeant Ian Osland of Kapiti police said.
He was taken to Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit in a critical condition but died late this morning, police said.
His name has not yet been released.
The driver and passenger of the Mitsubishi van involved in the incident were shaken, but not injured.
