Police investigating the scene of the patu attack

A man is in a critical condition in Auckland's Middlemore Hospital after being bashed with a traditional Maori club.

The 30-year-old was attacked by a driver wielding a patu outside his home in Port Waikato south-west of Auckland last night.

The incident occurred when the victim left his home to confront a group of people doing burn-outs on his street.

After the altercation the offenders took off toward Tuakau, police later took one man into custody.
