A 38-year-old Eastern Bay of Plenty man charged after a four-month-old baby boy suffered non-accidental injuries leading to permanent and severe brain damage has been remanded in custody.
The man was arrested in Auckland last week and appeared briefly in Whakatane District Court today, charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He was remanded in custody to reappear in court on June 1.
The man faces eight other charges, including male assaults female, assault with intent to injure, receiving, threatening to kill, common assault and two charges of possession of cannabis for supply.
A police investigation was launched after the four-month-old baby was admitted to Auckland's Starship Hospital on April 29.
The baby has since been taken off life support but has suffered severe brain damage.
