Man in custody after Northland death

A 42-year-old man is in custody after appearing in court following the death of a 61-year-old man in Northland.

The 42-year-old, whose name is suppressed, appeared in Dargaville District Court charged with assaulting Christopher Edwards on Wednesday.

Mr Edwards was flown to Auckland Hospital for emergency surgery on Wednesday evening when he was found in a house about 13km southeast of Dargaville and could not be woken following a fight.

He died in Auckland Hospital on Friday.

The arrested man was remanded in custody and will reappear in Dargaville District Court on Tuesday, the Northern Advocate reported.

A post-mortem is being carried out and police are speaking to people who were at the house.
