A 25-year-old man has been hit and killed by a passenger train in Masterton.

The accident happened this morning about 2km southwest of central Masterton in the suburb of Solway, a statement from police says.

Emergency services are at the scene.

According to Tranz Metro the Wairarapa train line is closed and will not reopen until later on Wednesday afternoon. Replacement bus services are being organised.

The death has been referred to the coroner.
