A man who was seriously injured after being hit by a train is believed to have been wearing headphones at the time.

Police say emergency services were called to the level crossing on the intersection of Porters Ave and New North Rd in Mt Eden just before 9am this morning after a man was hit by a passenger train.

A St John’s Ambulance spokesperson says the man in his 40s was transported to Auckland Hospital with serious injuries.

Police say the man may have been wearing headphones and listening to an iPod when he was hit, the New Zealand Herald reports.

Senior Sergeant Junior Abraham told the paper two trains were going past when the barrier arms came down and the man walked out after the first train had gone past, not realising there was another train coming from the other direction.

Trains between Kingsland and Britomart were cancelled for most of the morning, but are operating again now and Auckland Transport says passengers should expect delays.

Auckland Transport tweeted this morning that “train services between Kingsland & Britomart are cancelled due to an incident”.

This morning the scene was being examined by the police serious crash unit and the commercial vehicle investigation unit.

Typical speculation from the media. Next it will be said he had some Marijuana in his blood, oh and he had alcohol sometime in the last week. The headphones had nothing to do with the crash. Him forgetting how important it is to look left then right then left again is. The media jumping on the headphone angle will make big intrusive politicians try and restrict their use in some way - you watch.

@Katrina Train accidents are high profile due to the low numbers. More pedestrians are hit by buses and cars but not all of these make the news like train accidents.
