Police are looking for a man spotted in the water near the Auckland Harbour Bridge after drivers on the bridge reported seeing someone running on the motorway in the early hours of the morning.

Police say there were numerous sightings of a male running on the northbound lanes of the bridge about 1am on Saturday.

A short while later, the police helicopter located a person in the water.

"Unfortunately the person disappeared from view," Senior Sergeant Chris Money said.

Police want anyone with information about the missing man to come forward.

The public have provided two different descriptions. One is a young European male in his late teens of slight build, wearing light pants and a shirt.

The other is a male between 25 and 30 years old, wearing a blue dress shirt and pants.

The Auckland Harbour Bridge is part of State Highway 1 and there is no pedestrian access to it.
