Can I put in two cents worth... I worked under Klein and I have to say he was an amazing man. He was a an absolutely brilliant Electrical Engineer and an inventor. He used to rage about the North Shore pony and how he made a timing device for them. He is the inventor of a LOT of the exhibits you enjoy at the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) and he has done more work for other museums. Klein was in the process of creating a cheap and fast blood analyser that if completed would have saved the life/reduce suffering for a lot of people. Yes he lost the plot, but he's not your average criminal... he's done so many good deeds. I'm not saying let him free but he deserves a fair trial and he doesn't deserve all the comments left on this page.

Its simple, the nice old man who was meters away from home lost his life to soon because this pathetic excuse for a justice / mental health system in NZ is to PC! I don't know if victim had a wife? He would have had a family, and how would you like this to be done to your dad, or grandad..... The guy stands in the court and he just looks insane! People like this need serious attention and this should never be done out in the local society. Keep them alive to avoid the dramas of getting rid of these creeps! Use tax payers money, as I know id rather pay to have this guy kept out of my way on the roads or where he may want to go! You cant help those who are wired loose!

I think that the 'not guilty by reasons of insanity' plea is such a heap of shit. Even if he was one skittle short of a lolly bag, is letting him take a life and get away with it fair? After all he seems to have a superiority complex from the 'punishing the police' thing. He'll probably think he's god now because he's going to get away with murder.

Having known this nutter Mr Klein myself I know he has been in and out of mental institutions half his life, perhaps thats where they should have left him and this wouldn't have happened. Perhaps there needs to be a three strikes rule for mental patients such as him, or maybe we should call it three strikes and you're in, for life, to protect society from the psychological and in this case physical carnage they leave behind when they are constantly stamped sane and let out amongst us with no supervision.

Brian 03 Feb 2010 4:19p.m. It's high time everyone realised human life isn't sacrosanct. We put down rabid dogs, have no compunction about destroying feral rabbits, possums rat and mice etc so why not "remove" permanently those who have transgressed to the point of being unacceptable of remaining within society.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> This would leave huge grey areas such as with gays etc, you get one group who is completely intolerant and they'll push for the slaughter those who a different or they deem unacceptable in society. Fair enough some people deserve to be shot but where would we set the boundaries?? Would it lead to another holocaust or hate and intolerance of those who a different? Thinking about where this could go churns my stomach.

From being locked up in the past, to driving a Jeep Cherokee, no less. Progress, well at least until the crash....but where did the jeep cherokee come from?

It's high time everyone realised human life isn't sacrosanct. We put down rabid dogs, have no compunction about destroying feral rabbits, possums rat and mice etc so why not "remove" permanently those who have transgressed to the point of being unacceptable of remaining within society. The punishment must fit the crime. Once it was an eye for an eye, and that's biblical for us "Christians" and current practice in "another" religion I won't mention here. Another commonly accepted stupidity is mental health "problems" are often accepted as an excuse. And the other chestnut, drunk - or on drugs - and wasn't responsible for what I did. Not guilty by way of insanity should be "guilty but insane" and still appropriately locked away if where "dispatching" isn't warranted.

Katrina, if the psychiatric reports suggest his actions were due to the symptoms of bipolar disorder (one of which can be psychosis) then he can be regarded as insane, and hence unfit to stand trial. 'dude', shooting mentally ill people in the back of the head most prominently occurred under Nazism. The Chinese, despite their trigger happy approach to justice, would've most likely condemned a man such as Mr Klein to a rubber room and straitjacket rather than simply take him out the back and pepper him with lead.

Not exactly Dave.Hitler used to have large clinics. The mentally ill went through the front door were injected with a lethal substance, taken out the back and disposed of.The Russians shoot perverts, pedophiles, nutters, through the back of the head. The Chinese shoot nutters.criminals through the back of the head and send the cost of the execution including the bullet to the relatives.
