A 30-year-old Southland man has been remanded in custody to reappear in the Invercargill District Court on January 5 in connection with a prolonged assault on a woman.
Police were called to an incident at 4:55pm yesterday in the rural township of Wendon, north-west of Gore.
The woman is in hospital.
The Invercargill armed offenders squad was sent to the scene because the man had access to firearms. He was arrested as he fled a house.
The man has been charged with assault with intent to injure.
