A 28-year-old man is in Palmerston North Hospital after being shot in the arm by police early today.

Officers were searching for a man wanted on assault and disqualified driving charges when the shooting occurred at a house in Kirk Street, Otaki, 74km north-west of Wellington, about 1am.

"We know that inside the address there was a confrontation between the 28-year-old man and police which resulted in the man being shot in the arm," acting central police district commander Inspector Dave White said.

The man was treated by the officers and paramedics before being transferred to hospital in a stable condition.

A second man, 31, was arrested and charged with obstruction. He was due to appear in Levin District Court today.

Mr White said Palmerston North and Wanganui police would investigate the shooting and the Independent Police Conduct Authority had been notified.
