A man is in hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed in the chest during a domestic incident in Coromandel.

Emergency services were called to a house in the town about 9:45pm on Thursday.

Police and ambulance staff found the 31-year-old victim in the house's kitchen with two stab wounds in his chest.

Another man and a 36-year-old woman were in the room with the victim.

He was flown to Auckland Hospital by helicopter, while the woman was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon.

Police say more charges are likely.

Waihi police Detective Glenn Ewing says it appears the man was stabbed by his partner during a dispute.

Both were believed to have been drinking in the lead up to the incident.

The house was under guard overnight and a forensic examination would be carried out on Friday.
