A young man took a toddler and baby on a joy ride in a stolen car reaching speeds of up to 140km/h before crashing in Dunedin, police say.

The children's father was inside a petrol station on Hillside Road when the man got into the car and sped off while the three-year-old and 18-month-old were asleep in the back seat, Senior Sergeant Tania Baron told NZ Newswire.

The incident happened about 10.20pm on Thursday.

Driving up to 140km/h, he allegedly raced along State Highway 1 before crashing into an abutment on an overbridge near Saddle Hill Rd about 10 minutes later.

A witness told police the man then jumped out of the car and ran off before returning to the scene where he was arrested by police.

The children were not hurt but taken to hospital as a precaution.

A 25-year-old Invercargill man is in custody and due to appear in Dunedin District Court on Friday morning charged with excess breath alcohol.

More charges are likely.

According to the Otago Daily times report, the first thought the owner of the car had was for his 'wheels'. He later remembered the kids were in the back. I suspect there isn't a brain cell to be found between the victim, offender and the mate who was in the car with the kids and got out allowing the thief to take the car in the first place.
