Police are hunting an armed man after he got into a scuffle with a Wellington hotel employee this morning.
At about 5:20am, the man jumped the reception counter at the Abel Tasman Hotel and pointed a pistol at the clerk, who fought back and managed to escape.
"It was a frightening attack, especially as a firearm was involved," says Det Sgt Martin Todd.
"We hope that the public can assist in identifying the person involved."
The attacker is described as European, probably in his late 20s, average height and build with short hair. He was wearing a black beanie and a blue cap with the words "Murupara Hotel", brown glasses, a brown check shirt, an orange vest, blue jeans and white shoes.
"Police are appealing for any witnesses to the attack or any suspicious activity around the time of the incident," says Det Sgt Martin Todd.
"We are interested in hearing from people who know a person who has worn a Murupara Hotel baseball cap in the past."
