Champions league finalists in three of the last four seasons, Manchester United needed a draw against Swiss team Basel just to make it out of their group. But nine minutes in, they faced the unthinkable when they conceded a goal, and eventually lost the game 2-1.

Their cross town rivals, Manchester City, enjoyed a better start to their night against Bayern Munich and winning the game 2-nil, but still needed group rivals Villareal not to go down to Napoli if they were to go through to the next round. A 2-nil win to the Italian team meant that Manchester City also failed to go on.

Both Manchester clubs now suffer the embarrassment of dropping down to the second-tier Europa League.
