Maori Council readies for court action

The Maori Council has spent the weekend readying itself for potential negotiations with the Government, but first it wants to be recognised.

The meeting over the weekend called for nominations from the regions for negotiators, but they will only be needed if Prime Minister John Key agrees to meet the council for talks.

Deputy Chair Rahui Katene says the Government can't simply negotiate with a select group of iwi and hapu as it is planning to.

"They're not the only ones involved, and we do need to make it clear to them that although not every Maori has a water claim, it is a claim of national significance to all Maori."

Ms Katene says if the Government fails to respond, the council will go ahead with Waitangi Tribunal or court action.

Mark, Mark, Mark you are way ahead of yourself young man, slow down, chill out please and set your mind on this. A crime was committed, stolen land and we are paying the consequences for that dreadful act. Now how best can we remedy the errors of our forefathers when we know, everyone knows, globally, the UN, you know what would be the best thing for us as (I don't know about you, speaking for myself but not so) proud NZer/s do to reverse the wrong? After all a criminal act was committed? Mark this very basic, you don't have to be intelligent to answer this question and purposely tailored the question for you, Mark, Eddie, Atrout, Gosh and anyone else who supports these fine articulate human beings. I really do believe you all have a heart. Looking forward to your response young leader.

@Kathryn, not sure of your information sources. Maori don't use taxpayers money for court cases against the Crown. But of course, they should. Whose money do you think the Crown uses for their court actions with Maori? = Crown Law Office is paid for how???

@adrian FACT Maori have sold nz twice, so in fact who does nz belong too? And Adrian are you saying if nz wasn't settled by Europeans that nz would be how it is now? And all the Maori here right now would be here (even though they are a mixed race now) if we should give Maori back nz so they can live how they did before Europeans arrived then when are we going to be given back our technology(cars, tvs, computers etc) health, education, knowledge etc. so they can live how they did, in the stone age killing, enslaving and eating one and another. So please tell me how Maori today have it hard compeared to how they did a few hundred years ago?

@Kathryn. That suggestion has apartheid written all over it. @Eddie removing all the commercial businesses etc is insignificant in the greater scheme of things and does not deserve a mention. Theft on the other hand is a crime and in most cases property is returned to the owner if identified and the perpetrators punished according to law. The facts are, most of Aotearoa was stolen and people like you have to date lived a wholesome life off Maaori misfortune effectively, legally speaking making your ilk accomplices to the original criminal act. So first things first deal with the crime first and all those involved then see if our western commercial interest can accommodate you when you're incarcerated. Maaori might decide to confiscate them first then sell off our businesses brought from what could be argued criminal assisted cash flow to cover your expenses while inside. The moral of the story Eddie is, if you steal something that isn't yours, give it back. If you receive something that is stolen and use it to benefit your life style, the law views you no different to the person who stole it. So do the decent thing and just give the land back to Maaori.

Wiseacre mentioned that court action is inevitable. The Government have made their position clear from the onset so it's obvious this will end up in court. If maori decide on court action, it should not be at the taxpayers expense. Simple. They should use the money from treaty settlements to pay for it.

Mark if telling the truth makes me a racist redneck then ok I am a redneck. Just give Maaori their land back. Our ancestors stole it. We've enjoyed a happy living off it, generated an income off it. Let's just give it back it's well overdue wouldn't you think?

Adrian...at least have the decency to call them by correct name, it's Maori...not "Maaori".
ohh and you are full of it, give them back the land...OK, in the 1840 way it was?...take off all comercial property/businesses...OK, see how far that will get you Adrian, Give them back what they want...no money is required as it's the MANA and redress, 1840!...now ask Hone/Pita/tariana if they will accept ALL Maori land to be handed back, pre 1840 and watch theoir reply Adrian, and if it's not what you think, then it must be the $$$'s and not MANA?...agreed?...send an email to Hone, i'll be interested in his reply to you, afterall if Maoridom was so serene and Idyllic back in 1840 (or before) they can go back to what they were in peace, agreed Adrian?

If Maori got 49%, at least ownership would stay in NZ. The way to resolve this is NOT to sell the assets - simple but John Key doesn't get it. His problem. He caused it.

This is all because these maori want the 49% shares for free that's it, this is all what it's about. It has been said by Maori (look back at the story on 3news when this started) and the Maori council have already stated when the waitangi tribunal hearing started " now we are just working out how much we will get." so no this has nothing to do with stopping soa, it's about the money. Are does this make me a redneck or a hillbilly? Stating facts does not make you a racist, calling people rednecks and hillbillies because you can't handle the truth makes you a racist. Besides we don't live in the USA so this name call doesn't mean crap. Maybe some people should go back to school.
