Fathers side 1798 mothers side 1823 Maori on both sides But my blood lines are weak.however my greater family has deep bloodlines to the land and culture, I have read about my Irish and Chinese ancestors Clarke, and my NZ heritage and ancestor and yes there are alot of atrocities. and am Happy to talk about them, The fact cannibalism and slavery was alive and thriving Here when we arrived should be a topic of discussion. But I am not deluded as to why the heads were taken in the first place that is also part of the culture. Jan, English would better describe me.

Brent, Your Chinese American Irish? How far back in New Zealand Heritage does your linage go? "We signed a treaty"? Do you actually have any reason to comment at all? Or shall we start with outlining Atrocities your fellow Chinese Ancestors committed back in the day, or shall we bring up some of the many human rights abuses that are still going on today? and Being part American i don't think you can comment at all, America is the biggest abuser of its power, shall we bring up Early American History concerning The Native populations? John, the heads were traded with early Europeans, that's not disputed. "all the put on tears" So your saying that the descendants of the warriors that lost their heads don't have a right to bring their ancestors home, that they should be more concerned about the Maori Crime Rates and forget about their heritage and history. Not so long ago the country was in morning over an un-known warrior being returned home to its rightful place, Pretty much given what you could call a "state funeral" Why was he not just left to rest where he was buried in France? Because he deserved to be brought home to his country. As soon as Maori want to do the same for their ancestors its a big deal and they should just get over it. New Zealanders are seen across the world as a tolerant people, if only the truth was told about our so called "tolerance' for our own. Hypocrites

What a big load of rubbish all the put on tears, maori sold the heads to whalers etc in the first place, pity they weren't more concerned about maori crime rates today.

Brent, Maori are not putting the remains away out of shame, nether are they trying to hide anything, Maori/New Zealanders are protecting the remains and choosing to re-bury them out of respect. They are our ancestors for heaven sake, what else can you learn from these remains? Their Diet?!?! They've been out on display for the past hundred years and there are countless images of them on the web, photographs, books and posters, what else do you want! Maori have never been ashamed of their heritage and their culture. And to say that we Maori have done more atrocities than the people we accuse of causing atrocities against us ... Really?!?! get your head out of the gutter mate. The pointless Murdering of Jews, Lamp shades made out of the flesh of Jewish prisoners during WW2, The decapitations and murders of Albinoss in Africa, Aboriginies being forced to mate with people outside of their culture in an attempts by europeans to Bred out their race, being forbidden to speak your native tongue because it's not English... those are only SOME real Atrocities dude, NOT the way of our ancestors lived. Slavery, cannibalism and head hunting was a way of life for not only Maori, but for most indigenous cultures. And if you argue this, than my questions is, what are you so scared of? The truth?

Nothing scares me Brent. They are not items to me, I am not Maori Brent. But I do have a small understanding of what is sacred within Maori Culture. Why does it pain you so much that they want the heads and remains returned to their rightful resting place? It’s not a matter of covering up History; I didn’t say anything of the sort. Yes the Maori culture protects the bones, it is Their culture it is their ancestors. If I was to go and Dig up some remains from the first world war, some war hero who fought in Gallipoli, because I believe their remains to tell me a little bit more about the history of the war, are you still going to sing along to the same tune? It is a matter of respect, we all know what happened in early New Zealand History and there was Cannibalism and slavery, as in most cultures. If you were to go far enough back through history you will probably find even your ancestors once ate their enemies. “We didn’t try to cull a race” I think you may need to go back to the library and research exactly the extent colonials tried to stamp out Maori culture and to assimilate them forcibly into our culture and way of living. Were you ever beaten at school for speaking your native language? Were you told to change your name because it wasn’t acceptable, being Maori? Remembering that these examples were still happening mid 1900’s. Don’t try and lecture me on who is entitled to what by rights Brent. Why is it so hard for a lot of New Zealanders to accept that Maori have their own culture, and what is sacred to them may not be to us. Is it our right to say what they can and can’t do within their culture just because some are to arrogant to even try and understand it. Brent do one thing try not to foreget where you came from, if you look far enough back I’m sure your ancestors have skeletons in the closet as we all do.
